Between 1881 and 1920, imigration to the United States skyrocketed. An imennse number of people - over 23 million - came to America's shores in succesive waves, most of the from Europe. They came for various reasons. Some wanted to escape from corupt political regimes, while others were fleeing economic depresion. All of them saw the United States as a land in which they'd be able to find new opportunities.
