After her husbands death, Martha Coston perfected their mutul idea for colored signal flares, which were used by the navy in the civil war. Margeret Knight, whose inventions had an ecinomic effect on shopkeepers, got a patent in 1868 for a machine that made square-bottomed paper bags. Think of Margaret the next time a clerk asks "paper or plastic"?
